For a long time, I stopped telling this story. I was tired of some people laughing in my face. People are so cynical and evil these days. But this is my story and I will retell it to as many as will listen. I believe these things happen so that we can tell others! I also believe stories of this nature are more common than we may think. So, here goes . . .
On a beautiful autumn day, I was driving home from work. I was a young guy, younger than 18. I was not involved with church at that time. I believed in God, but that idea competed with my agnostic beliefs (we can’t know there is a God). I was a confused puppy when it came to belief in God.
I was simply driving home from work like I had done 100’s of times before. I felt great. Work was over! I was smoking a Marlboro Red, had the radio on BLAST listing to my favorite R&R. I think I listened to a little Country back then, too.
In my bliss, I suddenly heard a voice speaking to me. The voice seemed both serious and nonchalant. Perhaps it was simply blasé. I could decern no personality, only a clear message.
The message was “if you don’t slow down, you will be killed within the next few seconds.” If these are not the exact words, they are extremely close. I was very frightened. I was about to be a lot more frightened.
I was driving down a very curvy road, which was fun to drive at 60-75 mph (97-121 kph) — at least until one can hear their tires squeal a bit. I knew I didn’t have a lot of time to react but I looked around the car quickly, especially in the back seat for a person. I was alone. I tossed out my cigarette, turned the radio down and at the time bringing the car down to about 30 MPH.
Around the next curve, I knew there was a large church on the right. When I got into view, I saw a school bus turning around in the church parking lot. The bus took up both sides of the road and then some. There was no way to avoid running over this bus at 70MPH unless I had slowed down. It seems like I can remember the bus driver’s face. It seemed like she said, “I’m glad you were not going fast!”
Yes, I was scared before when I first heard the voice; however, I was terrified after I realized the gravity of the situation. People should have died that day. I like to think that some of those kids (or maybe it was that church!) was praying for those busses.
If you have a story of where God reached down, just because of His grace, please share it in the comments.
